Joey Michaels

Joey Michaels joined the firm as an Associate Attorney in May 2013, and
was named Partner on May 1, 2023. Since joining Jeffrey S. Schecter &
Associates, P.C., Ms. Michaels' practice has been dedicated to all
aspects of matrimonial and family law litigation, including custody, visitation,
equitable distribution, child and spousal support, enforcement proceedings,
modification proceedings, and family offense proceedings. Ms. Michaels
is responsible for handling complicated financial divorce cases, and excels
at the navigation of complex financial issues that may exist within the
landscape of matrimonial matters. Ms. Michaels routinely implements a
strategic prosecution or defense of all client’s rights. Ms. Michaels'
approach to client advocacy has resulted in favorable decisions and settlements
for her clients. Ms. Michaels’ prides herself on having the utmost
integrity in her profession and the representation of her clients.
Ms. Michaels is not only an experienced trial attorney, but has also become
a seasoned appellate practitioner, having written and argued numerous
appellate matters before the Appellate Division of the State of New York
relative both matrimonial and family law issues with great success.
Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Michaels practiced in several areas of the
law in addition to matrimonial and family law, including civil litigation,
commercial litigation, and Article 81 guardianship proceedings. Her experience
provides her with insight and knowledge relative to these other areas
of the law that may overlap with a matrimonial or family law matter. Ms.
Michaels was instrumental in the negotiation and settlement of complex
litigation matters for both corporate and individual clients. Ms. Michaels
was also certified under Part 36 of the Rules of the Chief Judge as a
guardian ad litem, court evaluator and attorney for alleged incapacitated
persons, which operate in Article 81 guardianship proceedings, thus expanding
her knowledge on these matters.
Ms. Michaels obtained her Juris Doctor from New York Law School and is
admitted to practice before the courts in both New York and New Jersey.
Ms. Michaels obtained her Bachelors of Arts in Forensic Psychology from
John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she graduated magna cum laude.
Ms. Michaels is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau
County Women's Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association,
and the American Bar Association.
